Geriatric Dentistry

It is important to show some attention to your oral health if you want them to stay healthy in your later years. Elderly patients are more prone to gum disease, dental decay, oral cancer, mouth infections, and tooth loss. The good news is that we can prevent these dental conditions.

At Advanced Dental, our multi-disciplinary team of dental specialists, dental surgeons and dental assistants are experienced in treating and caring for elderly patients with underlying medical conditions.

    What is Geriatric Dentistry?

Geriatric dentistry focuses on the dental needs of elderly patients, involving the management and prevention of age-related oral diseases. Maintaining good dental health is essential in achieving good overall health.

    Why is it important?

Here are a few reasons why specialized care is needed for elderly patients:

Potential drug interactions – Elderly patients tend to take over-the-counter medications that increases the chance of drug interactions, medication errors and drug reactions. Trained dentists are required to take special precautions when treating the elderly.

Compassion and understanding – Elderly patients may have sensory, physical or cognitive impairments that complicate dental treatment and communication. Geriatric dental providers are able to handle the elderly and communicate in a simple way so they understand.

Patience and consideration – Elderly patients may have underlying conditions such as dementia or physical limitations. Geriatric dental providers are prepared to stop a treatment if required and continue another day.

How often should elderly patients get dental care check-ups?

We recommend routine dental check-up twice a year for seniors. However, those who suffer from dental issues may require more visits. Routine dental check-ups help to prevent common dental problems and treat dental issues in a timely manner before it worsens. If you or your loved ones have gum disease, missing teeth or oral cysts, you may need to see your dental specialist every two to three months. Remember to schedule a routine check-up with your regular dentist who can answer any specific questions or concerns you may have regarding your dental care.

    Pain Free Dentistry

For many, dental procedures have always been associated with pain. Pain is one of the main reasons why many patients avoid going to the dentist. At Advanced Dental, our dental experts are equipped to provide a pain-free experience with various anaesthetic options.

    • Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas)
Nitrous oxide is administered through a custom nosepiece to produce a calming effect, reducing fear and anxiety, enabling patients to better tolerate injections or other potentially uncomfortable procedures. The effects wear off almost instantly once the procedure is done.
    • Local Anaesthesia
Local anaesthetic is administered via an injectable to impart a numbing effect that lasts for up to 60 minutes. It is injected into the part of the mouth that requires treatment. Patients won't experience any sedation or altered consciousness from local anaesthesia.
    • IV Sedation
For procedures longer or more complicated procedures, IV (Intra-venous) sedation is used to induce a state of deeper relaxation. It is carried out by a certified anaesthetist who will monitor the patient throughout the duration of the procedure.
    • General Anaesthesia
General anaesthesia is administered via an IV drip and it affects the entire body and produces a state of unconsciousness. This is used for lengthy, extensive oral surgeries that might cause more pain than local anaesthesia can address.
