Living With Braces: 5 Tips for Comfort

Practical Advice to Ease Discomfort and Keep Your Smile on Track

New braces take some getting used to, and a little soreness in the first week is normal. These practical tips keep you comfortable and your treatment on track.

1. Ease the first-week soreness

Your teeth and gums may ache for a few days after braces are fitted or adjusted. Stick to soft foods, and a cold drink or cold water can soothe the ache. Simple over-the-counter pain relief helps if you need it.

2. Use orthodontic wax for rubbing

If a bracket or wire rubs against your cheek or lip, press a small piece of orthodontic wax over it to create a smooth surface. Keep some with you — it's the quickest fix for irritation until things settle.

3. Eat braces-friendly foods

Favour soft foods — porridge, noodles, eggs, fish, steamed vegetables, yoghurt. Avoid hard, sticky, and chewy foods (nuts, hard sweets, chewing gum, ice) that can break a bracket or bend a wire. Cut firm foods like apples into small pieces rather than biting straight in.

4. Keep them clean to avoid problems

Food traps around brackets, so brush after meals and clean between teeth daily with an interdental brush or floss threader. Good hygiene prevents the swelling, staining, and decay that make braces uncomfortable. See 6 daily habits for healthy teeth and gums.

5. Handle small problems early

A poking wire can often be nudged flat with the clean end of an eraser and covered with wax. If a bracket comes loose or a wire is causing real pain, contact your orthodontist for an adjustment rather than waiting it out.

Keep your eyes on the result

The early discomfort fades as you adjust, and each visit moves you closer to a straighter, healthier smile. If anything feels off between appointments, your orthodontist would rather hear from you early. Weighing your options? See Invisalign vs metal braces or book a braces consultation.
