Dental Emergencies in Singapore: A Guide
Last reviewed
Fast, reliable care for toothaches, broken teeth, and other urgent dental problems in Singapore
A dental emergency is any problem that needs prompt care to relieve pain, save a tooth, or stop an infection spreading — a knocked-out tooth, a severe toothache, a broken tooth, a lost filling or crown, or facial swelling. Here's how to handle the common ones, and how to get seen quickly in Singapore.
Get seen fast
For a knocked-out tooth or uncontrolled bleeding, time matters. Call us or book online for the earliest slot, and use the urgent option for same-day care where available. For severe facial swelling, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or a serious injury after an accident, go to a hospital A&E.
Common emergencies and what to do
Knocked-out tooth
A knocked-out adult tooth can sometimes be saved if you act within about 30 minutes:
- Hold the tooth by the crown (the top), never the root.
- Rinse it gently with water — don't scrub or remove any attached tissue.
- Try to slot it back into the socket and bite gently on a clean cloth. If you can't, keep it in milk or hold it inside your cheek.
- Get to a dentist immediately.
Severe toothache
- Rinse with warm water and floss gently to remove any trapped food.
- Apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek for swelling.
- Take simple pain relief as directed, and book an appointment — a persistent ache can mean infection or an abscess.
Broken or chipped tooth
- Save any fragments and rinse your mouth with warm water.
- Use a cold compress for swelling.
- See a dentist as soon as possible to repair it before the nerve is affected.
Lost filling or crown
- Keep the area clean by rinsing with salt water, and avoid chewing on that side.
- See your dentist promptly so the exposed tooth doesn't decay or break.
Abscess or infection
- Rinse with warm salt water and take pain relief as directed.
- Get seen quickly — a dental abscess can spread and needs treatment, not just painkillers.
Why prompt care matters
Delaying treatment can turn a small problem into a painful one, and can be the difference between saving and losing a tooth. When in doubt, it's safer to get checked.
